My friends and I are, and we're even taking the Amtrak. We're wondering if there are going to be any other awesome people on the train with us!

Duck, you should take the train with us. We've got another friend or two that we're trying to convince. It shouldn't be too hard, and there will be much geeking. If there's room, I have my guitar and have figured out about three songs from A Very Potter Musical. Just saying.

Hahaha, I think Arodhwen and I both understand the uncertainty.
I'm afraid to fly, or I might have reallyreally considered the airplane- there are some rather shockingly cheap fares out there. And I originally wanted to make it a road trip, but Arodhwen gave me the "What if we're 300 miles out and the car breaks down?" talk.
If you do decide to take the train, let us know!! We'll try to plan in which compartment to meet, or make a phone chain or something : D

The auto train, last time I checked, was crazy-expensive.

Is the auto train, like...the one where you take your car, too, I guess?

Yep. The NE Auto Train runs from Washington DC to Orlando, FL. Price for one adult (one way) is around $95; adding a car takes the total to around $250. I should add that the trip will take a good 17.5 hours or so.
Still, it's about the only option for those who want their car in Orlando but don't want to drive there.
EDIT: The Auto Train schedule can be found HERE (http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer/AM_Route_C/1241245666320/1237405732511).

We don't know anything about parking/price of parking at the RP. I can see those wheels spinning, and I know exactly what they're thinking.

Most hotels (in my experience) don't charge parking for hotel guests -- so if you're staying there for the con that shouldn't be an issue. As for charging for parking for con guests -- most cons don't (the last one I went to in Orlando didn't). Granted, the proximity of the hotel to USF/IoA might change that...

Where are you leaving from? I was gonna road trip it, but I kind of don't have a car anymore, so that's not really gonna work out anymore... =( Anyhoo, I just started looking into other methods of travel. I live in Washington DC and was thinking of looking into Amtrak. I'd be radical to be on the same train as other Infinitus attendees.

We're leaving from DC, actually, and our tickets are for the Silver Meteor. I THINK this is all correct. I KNOW DC is correct. We're actually going up a day early, so that we arrive around 1p on the 14th. I do not have the actual tickets, so I can't be certain. Cassiopeia might know better.

Very cool. I'm still deciding how I'm gonna get down there, but If I end up taking the train, I'll definetly let you know. =) Man, I'm getting so excited! Why is July still so far away!

We're coming from MD. The train sounds like fun (Hogwarts Express), but in the interest of time, we'll prob. be flying. Not sure which airport yet, I have to check fares. We are equidistant btwn BWI and Philly but like convenient little DCA (Reagan National) a lot, so hopefully from there.

Wow. I looked into the Amtrak auto train, and it looks great. I thought I'd post what I found out, for those of you considering the train.
This website has detailed descriptions: http://www.on-track-on-line.com/autotrain-tips.shtml. The auto train goes from Lorton, VA (1/2 hr south of DC) to Sanford, FL (1/2 north of Orlando). I called Amtrak (877-skip-I95) and spoke with a very pleasant agent who gave me several prices very efficiently.
When I compare to flying, it seems to be a good option if we are not tight on time (takes 17.5 hrs). Nonstop flights on Airtran from DCA are about $140-$190 ea right now depending on website (and there are extra fees for bags, aisle seats, etc.), and no discounts for my kids. Southwest is equivalent when you figure they don't charge for bags. Usair is more. Then to rent a car for a week it will cost us about $300.
The auto train for our family of 4, including the car AND incl. meals is a TOTAL of $771.80 (with 2 adult, 2 kid fares, and AAA 10% discount) if we sit coach (which is equivalent to the airline's first class seating (wide, recline, footrest), and of course you can wander around the train to lounge and dining cars. The price if we got the private family bedroom car would then go up to $1282.88, but we'd get beds and privacy, and more food choices.
I'm still not sure if we're doing it, but it certainly seems like it could be a good option. I hope this information helps someone else.

We've actually already got our tickets for a not-auto-train, but we did hear about it. We figured we'd probably be spending enough time at the hotel that it wouldn't be worth it to spend the extra to have a car. That if we desperately needed to leave, we could take a cab or something and it would cost about the same.

Hey I'm going to be taking the Amtrak from DC's Union Station. Anyone else leaving from here or know if their train is going to roll through there? It would be great to take the train with other Infinitus people!
Let me know!

We're leaving from Union Station July 13th. Our time is 7:30pm, but I think I remember there was one earlier in the day, also. Which one are you taking, Caleb?
And is that the same day for you, llauder?

and yeah as for getting there, I'm taking the train that leaves on the 13th at 7:30 as well! I'm so excited to not be the only person going by train. We'll definitely have to meet up at some point on the trip.
ARGH! It's almost May! that means less then three months! so close yet so far away!

Just an update, I've somehow convinced two of my three roommates to take the train as well, (despite that fact that neither live near DC.) Still working on getting the third to come also, but we'll see.
I know I've said this in like every post, but I am SO STOKED! =D

EXCITING!
So for anyone taking the Amtrak (Silver Meteor? TO MARSimeaninfinitus) leaving from Union Station July 13th at 7:30p, Cassiopeia and I are organizing a DND CAMPAIGN.
No previous experience necessary. I'll have all the dice, mat, et cetera. We'll be playing 3.0 rules because that's what I learned and the books I have. All you have to do is print out a two-page (or double-sided one-page if you can) character sheet and fill it out. It takes approximately 3 hours to roll your first character, so it should be done ahead of time. (I can meet with you via Skype to talk you through it.)
Email me if you're interested in joining. (I need to know by 20 June so I can design the campaign accordingly.) arodhwen@yahoo.com
Hope to hear from you!
(PS- Why is it so exciting? Because I'm taking it out of standard DnD universes and creating all new monsters to go with it! Hint: name of the campaign is "Johnny Depp's Goggles." My campaign names are ALWAYS movie references. David Bowie's Pants... Stephen King with a Pizza...)

I don't know if someone else has already posted this but parking is $15 a night at the RP. Check their site/ring them to make sure but I remember seeing it somewhere.
