I live just north of Austin so I would only have a 3 hr drive to Dallas. What I'm wondering is if I should find a hotel very close to the Hilton that's cheaper or just save up like crazy and get a room there. It would make relaxing during the day easier.

I'll have recently turned 21 by the time of Portus... I'm excited and reallllly hope I can go!

A lot of people who don't stay in the hotel regret it later. A lot goes on late at night that you end up missing out on, and you can't just pop back to your room without missing things either, so it's really best to stay at the host hotel if you can.

By staying at the Anatole Hilton, you will help fulfill our required room block and contribute to future HPEF events. If you decide to stay somewhere, you might also miss out on impromptu discussions that always crop up in the public areas of the hotels.

Thanks for the advice... I guess I'll just have to save up like crazy, and see if anyone is interested in double occupancy, seeing as how I'm a kind of private person. I've done quad occupancy on various trips before and didn't like it, lol.

I've never been to one of these; I really wanted to go to Prophecy, but it was too far away for me... but this time I'm 3 hours away! So I reallly hope I'll be able to go :)

I stayed elsewhere for Prophecy, in an attempt to save some money, and let me say...it was a huge mistake. It was only about half a mile away, but you figure that's a mile from the conference to the hotel and back, and there's a lot of stuff I missed out on (the late night stuff, in particular), so I'm pretty sure for Portus I'll be getting a room of my own, and if I start saving now I'll be able to swing it.

I definitely recommend staying at the host hotel. My friend and I stayed elsewhere for Prophecy and it was a huge pain. You always had to carry your stuff with you and you miss out on some of the experience and late night things that are going on around the hotel. If I am able to go to Portus I will definitely be at the Hilton.

If you really want to save money my only suggestion would be to check around like priceline and those type of sites. Maybe you could get a room at the Hilton for cheaper on the name your own price thing or on one of the sites.

Either way; my suggestion is definitely stay at the host hotel. Makes life so much easier.

How do we get access to the block of rooms for the Con? I'm checking at the Hilton reservations page and getting "Not Available" for the weekend I'm choosing.

Nevermind. Found the link in the sticky at the top of the page. Really, that should be on the main Portus page. Thanks.
