Hello!! I have read and checked around the site, their livejournal and their facebook group, and this, being my first HP con (though not my first attempt at convincing my mum to bring me to one of them), I want to get as much information as possible so I can appeal to my mum to take me to Portus.

I'll be fifteen in time for the event, so that means that I do need a chaperone/guardian/parent with me, so to make sure that I can answer every question mum throws at me about the event, costs, registrations and stuff, I need to make sure I know for sure how this all works.

The situation;;
Mum is unsure of going because of the costs since we live on this little island in Canada, and it's expensive to fly places. So she is very unsure about the registration prices. I want to go, but she doesn't really want to participate in the events because that would be 4OO$ all together just for registration (not including the afternoon teas, luncheons and the masquerade ball). So, does mum have to register too, or can I register and just have her stay in the hotel room?

I've heard of the things done in Prophecy and Phoenix Rising and I've watched some videos from it, so I have some kind of idea about how it's geared towards adults. But can mum just kind of of give like a consent form that it's okay for me to be there, or (this is tied with the first question), does she have to register too and attend the events?

And also, being an HP con newbie, do the luncheons include the feasts, or are they seperate? And also, what goes on at the luncheons, teas and feasts? Dr. Henry Jenkins is speaking during one of them...is it like a lecture and food?

Sorry for asking so many questions~!! I hope to all see you there and that we'll all get to talk and meet up in person!! >.<

Cheers, wrock and love,
Emilia ~<3

Hi Emilia,

Yes, that's correct - you will need to have a parent or chaperone with you to attend, and they also will need to be registered and attend the conference with you.

The Luncheons and the Feasts are two separate events. The Welcoming and Leaving Feasts are included in the price of registration. The Keynote luncheons are an additional cost, and that includes the Keynote address with Dr. Henry Jenkins.

Hopefully this gets all of your questions!

Hi Emilia,

Our policy on chaperones is that they must be registered for the conference and have a signed and notarized permission slip with them. That is because, like you mentioned, some of our programming contains content of an adult nature. We require chaperones to be registered because they need to be with their minor(s) throughout the conference areas and we do not allow non-registered persons in those areas. They should also be present in those areas in order to monitor the programming attended by the person(s) they are chaperoning.

There are still options available to you. Many of our underage attendees find other attendees who are of chaperoning age (21 years old) and ask them to chaperone for them. The message boards are one popular way to do so.

On your other question, the feasts and the luncheons are separate. The Friday and Saturday luncheons are each an additional cost because they include a full meal as well as the special guest lecture. Feasts are included with your basic registration and are not an additional cost.

At the luncheons we will be having lunch while attending a lecture by our keynote speaker. Please note that our Saturday luncheon differs from our Friday luncheon, so if you wanted to attend both you would have to buy a ticket for each.

The afternoon teas offer a unique atmosphere to chat with friends (and make new ones) while enjoying an assortment of tea sandwiches, pastries, scones, and a selection of premium teas and coffees.

The Welcoming and Leaving Feasts are open to all registered attendees and will feature presentations by Steve Vander Ark of the HP Lexicon.

I hope this answers all of your questions. Of course, don’t hesitate to ask us to clarify anything for you. We’re more than glad to help.

Best Regards,
Aziza Aba Butain
